Dolly Parton Imagination Library

There are many reasons parents do not read to their children, but the Literacy Coalition of Hancock County believes that they can eliminate one of those reasons: a lack of books within the home. In 1996, Dolly Parton launched an exciting new effort, Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, to benefit the children of her home county in East Tennessee, USA. Dolly’s vision was to foster a love of reading among her county’s preschool children and their families.  Donations boxes during the holiday season are located at the check out desks at the Main Library, Arlington Branch and Bookmobile.

Through the Dolly Parton Imagination Library, children in Hancock County will have books of their own…at no cost to the family!  A new carefully selected book will be mailed, in the child’s name, to his or her home each and every month from birth until he or she turns five years of age.  The Literacy Coalition will raise the funds to cover the annual cost of $25/child/year or an average monthly cost of $2.08. Titles are chosen by a blue ribbon panel of educators, are age appropriate, and have concepts that build upon each other.  All children, regardless of household income are eligible for the program.  Registration is not based on socioeconomics, risk factors, participation in certain programs, parental factors or by any other means other than a child’s age and residence.  Should a child move out of Hancock County, he/she is deleted from the program unless the family moves to another community that participates in the Imagination Library program.

Registration forms for the Dolly Parton Imagination Library are available at the Children's Services desk at the Findlay-Hancock County Public Library.

Early Literacy Center

Welcome to the new Early Literacy Center, located in the Children's Services Department.

Parents or caregivers are encouraged to use the Early Literacy Center with their children, from birth to age 5, to enhance their library experience and to develop early reading skills. The center encourages learning by providing a vibrant literacy rich space to help young children develop early literacy skills using colors, letters, numbers, sounds, objects, shapes, textures and books.
The Early Literacy Center will feature an interactive sensory wall and activity wall, special book collections, an alphabet/numbers carpet, play tables, activity sheets and seating for parents and children. Over 100% of the cost of the project was covered by local donations.

NoveList is a readers' advisory service covering all types of fiction.
It was selected as a Library Journal Best Reference Database. It also offers a wide range of other resources like author and series searches, along with book reviews. With over 100,000 titles listed, along with 75,000 full text reviews, over 36,000 subject headings and a complete spectrum of searching options, NoveList gives both flexibility and power to even the most discriminating reader. Use the "Find a Favorite Author" or "Find A Favorite Title" feature to locate a list of John Grisham's titles, and then use one of these titles to find more than 200 legal thrillers. It also uses natural language searching to search NoveList's full-text reviews to find "fast-paced thrillers" or books that make good "read aloud" titles for a storytime or children's program.
