The One and Only Dylan St. Claire by Kamen Edwards
Illustrated by Jeffrey Ebbeler
Dylan's getting ready to audition for the school play, a musical about outer space, and he's got his sights set on playing the star . . . figuratively and literally. But when he ends up being cast as a squirrel, the real theatrics begin. Follow this extremely secure and unique boy through his daily dramas as he tackles each dilemma with pizzazz and skill.
Discussion Questions
- Dylan spent his summer perfecting his craft, preparing for the school’s musical auditions. What skills would you bring to a school musical? Do you like to sing? Dance? Act and play pretend?
- Dylan is very in touch with his emotions and has a breathing exercise for when his emotions get the best of him. What do you do to calm your body?
- What happened to change Dylan’s feelings about being cast as the squirrel? How did he find a way to shine?
Activites
- Play different styles of music and dance with the beat. How does your movement change with the music? Are you dancing faster? Slower? Tap your feet. Sway your arms. Wiggle your body.
- Many actors dress up to play a character in a musical. Create a costume with clothes or items around your house. Using your imagination, create a story for your character and play it out.
